Market Grackle

This is one of the many (many) grackles that skulk around the Central Market patio looking for unattended food.  As you can see by how close I was, they have little fear of humans.  Though the males are showier with their iridescent feathers, I think I prefer the warm brown of the females.

Spring Flowers

I think it is time for me to accept that I don't hate painting flowers anymore.  It's hard to avoid them in the Austin spring and they're so darn pretty...

Flower House

This spring, Austin seems especially beautiful.  In the Midwest, fall was always my favorite season.  Here, with the neighborhood rife with flowers, spring is the standout.  It probably has something to do with the fact that fall in Texas is usually too hot to be comfortable.

Pink Truck

Easter weekend is over, and although I didn't paint Easter eggs, I did paint this pink truck.  The truck in question wasn't really pink, but a distincly longhorn orange....ugh.

Thistle

I've always had a soft spot for this flower/weed.  I remember my mom asking me to pull it out of the backyard garden when I was a kid, which I never understood, because I thought it was pretty.

Swirl

"Swirl," Acrylic on Board, 30x40"
I skipped daily paintings yesterday in the interest of completing this big one.  It is titled 'Swirl' because the shadows on the ground look like water eddying around the base of the trees.

Daily paintings will resume tomorrow. :)

I did this last week, but forgot to post it.   In my tradition of capturing random people on the street, here's another impromptu portrait.    The reason this guy caught my attention was the long string of spittle that was hanging out of his mouth, glinting in the sunlight.  I was going to title it "Drool," but that just seemed icky.   He looks a bit more dashing in this painting then he did in person.

Another big painting completed today.  The title refers to my color reference.

I'm in the habit of taking random pictures of the people I see by the side of the road.  Beer anyone?

I'm breaking my own rule again and painting a flower.  I spotted this on a walk in my neighborhood and it was too pretty not to capture.  I especially liked the water droplets - which you might recognize as such, if I were a more realistic painter.  ;)

Old Truck

As promised, I'm back to doing my daily paintings this week.  I saw this old truck while walking my dog in the a part of the neighborhood I don't typically visit.   I'm not usually drawn to cars, but I loved the shape, color and everything else about this one. The rust added just he right patina to the blue paint.  Is it just me, or are the cars from several decades past more whimsical?  I'll have to keep my eyes out for more like this.

Light & Shadow

"Light & Shadow," Acrylic on Board, 24x36"

I can't believe I finished yet another big one this week - go me!   I'm not sure why I'm being so productive, maybe the fact that West is coming up soon?   The composition of this one is similar to several of the others I've done recently (Bough, Absence of Black, etc.).  When I look back over all of my tree paintings, almost all have the branches arching from right to left.  I wonder why I'm not drawn to paint trees going the other direction?  I like how the extreme the angle is on this tree and how the tree the limb on the far left touches the ground.  I also love the dappled light in the foliage on the left.

Sepia

"Sepia," Acrylic on Board, 20x16"
I didn't much like how my daily painting turned out today, so I'm posting my most recent big (well, not really that big) painting.  Enjoy.

Here's another common sight around my home.  My daughter (5-years-old) insists that she too is going to be an artist when she grows up.  I believe her.

Clifford & Roscoe

I'm a day late, but here I am back to doing daily paintings.  For those of you who also live in a house with small children, this sort of tableau is probably familiar.  The one on the left, Clifford, is especially beloved in our house.
